Honoring Those Who Served

Since 2007, The Association raised funds for a cast Perpetual Memorial that honors all deputies who have worked on the tactical team. While Deputy Lonny Brewer remains the only SWAT deputy killed in the line of duty (during a callout in Escondido in 1987), the Association feels it is important to recognize every deputy who has served at the tip of the Sheriff's tactical spear.

The Memorial Plaque will be permanently displayed on the entry wall at the Special Enforcement Detail's office in the Emergency Services complex located at Gillespie Field in El Cajon.

Each year around December 5th (the anniversary of Lonny's death), T.A.S.E. hosts a Memorial Reception to honor all those members who have died in the previous year. At the inaugural event in 2007, nine deputies were remembered by over 65 retired and current tactical team attendees. Honored that night were Bill Bradley, Lonny Brewer, Benny Collins, Paul Franklin, Rusty Hightman, E.J. Lubic, Carter McKenzie, Scott Noll, and Roger Williamson. In 2008, early SWAT team member Rich Richardson passed away. Rich was honored at the 35-year Anniversary event held in September. Gordy Brooke spoke about his memories of Rich and shared stories of his department and US Army career. Original SWAT member Bert Campbell died in November of 2009. He was honored at the 2010 memorial dedication reception on December 5th.
